Our Family Skate
Association (OFSA)
is a Washington, D.C. based non-profit organization dedicated
to empowering and uplifting the community through roller skating
events, projects, and programs.
OFSA
activities are designed to foster life long fitness habits and
encourage an interest in recreational and competitive aspects
of roller skating. OFSA’s
goal is to facilitate healthy, enjoyable, low cost, multi-generational
venues where elders are treasured, youth nurtured, and families
embraced.
“Family, Fitness & Fun” sets the tone for OFSA
event calendar. Each year OFSA
host events which expose youth, individuals with disabilities,
seniors, and families to the many health and social benefits of
roller skating. OFSA
participates in variety of area events offering roller skating
clinics, demonstrations, and presentations.
OFSA
through special projects is working to identify, preserve, and
highlight unique aspects of roller skating history; in particular
those from the African American perspective. Projects like the
National African American Roller Skating
Archives, “Every body’s got a skate
story!”, and a video documentary highlighting
the history of “Style Roller Skating” OFSA
is seeking to offer an in depth look into the fascinating world
of roller skating.
“Sport
for Life”, a series in school and summer camp programs
for youth that encourage physical fitness and healthy life style
habits, are being developed. While the programs expose participants
to recreational and competitive aspects of roller skating they
are also designed to facilitate the development of positive interpersonal
skills, problem solving skills, and conflict resolution strategy.
These programs will help to establish positive habits that will
last a life time.
OFSA
advocates roller skating as an excellent low cost multigenerational
recreational and fitness option for a diverse cross section of
people. The multigenerational dynamic possible in roller skating
venues creates an amazing social space that facilitates respect,
can provide role modeling for social interaction and personal
relationships, and with proper structuring can offer the village
environment often recommended for rearing children. For those
seeking to lessen life style and weight related illnesses regular
participation in roller skating activities can provide one of
the most fun and effective aerobic and overall body workouts.
Roller skating unlike most fitness activities is fun, inexpensive,
can accommodate a wide range of ages, and multitude of skill levels
thus making it one of the most flexible fitness option currently
available.
To educate
the general public on the health/ social benefits of roller
skating while preserving and promoting the rich history of roller
skating in the African American community.
To enhance
the total health, social well being, and community network for
all through roller skating.
